Today, the Environmental Health Network is kicking off a multi-week series called "Pollution, Poverty, People of Color." Their reporters have visited communities around the country, but they start the series here in California in the city of Richmond. "Low-income residents seeking affordable homes may save money on shelter," write the authors, "but they pay the price in health." The story weaves together 100 years of industrial and personal histories in a town home to 103,000 people, as well as "five major oil refineries, three chemical companies, eight Superfund sites, dozens of other toxic waste sites."
