There's a lot of discussion within the tech community about why there aren't as many female programmers and what can be done to change that. While no one knows the answer for sure, there is a fair amount of speculation that it can be harder for women to break into the field.

Whatever the reasons may be, there are a ton of resources available for women looking to code. One that I'm most excited about is PyStar. This all day event aims to teach women the basics of the popular programming language, Python, in a friendly, "non-alpha geek" environment. I've always been interested in Python and will definitely be attending. Best of all, registration is entirely free.

For women interested in learning programming and meeting with other like-minded folk, this is a great opportunity to get involved, learn more about the professional opportunities available and show the world that women can and do write code! I hope to see you there!

PyStar is running on September 10th from 9am - 4pm in downtown San Francisco at Mozilla's offices. If you'd like to register and learn more, visit PyStar's registration page.
