Pick up a new hobby this year. Become a maker!The new year is upon us, and while many of us have seen our resolutions come and go by now, here are a few events that will stimulate your mind and make you a better maker and science geek in 2011.

Maker Show and Tell

Make:SF holds two monthly meetings (one in SF and one in the East Bay) which each begin with a maker show and tell. Bring the cool projects you've been working on, discuss them with your peers and gets tips, ideas and inspiration.

Make Cool Stuff (or learn how to!)

TechShop has finally opened up their newest location smack in the middle of downtown SF. If you're not already familiar with the Menlo Park location, TechShop has literally dozens of machines, from CNC mills, laser cutters, sergers, 3D printers and scanners and a whole lot more (full list of machinery). Not sure what to do with all that equipment? Not to fear, TechShop offers dozens of classes to teach you.

Open House: Friday (1/14/11) check out the San Francisco location and meet author Kevin Kelly (Wired, What Technology Wants), 5 - 9pm.

Ponder the latest topics in science with your peers at these two monthly science book clubs:

Down to a Science book club is geared towards a variety of broad scientific issues. Their next meeting is on Monday 2/7/11 at Books Inc discussing The Disappearing Spoon by Sam Kean, 7 - 8:30 PM

Academy of Sciences Bookworms club focuses on biology, ecology books. Their next meeting is on Wednesday 1/19/11 discussing Remarkable Creatures: Epic Adventures in the Search for the Origins of Species by Sean B. Carroll, 6:30pm.
