Since joining KQED in 1990, Jo Anne led the expansion of KQED’s locally- produced news and information and community services. Today, KQED is one of the most-listened-to stations in the nation, and its digital audience is growing with audio streaming and on-demand and social media content.
In 2014, she was given the additional responsibility of supervising programming for KQED TV 9/San Francisco and TV 54/San Jose. During her tenure at KQED, Wallace has spearheaded the development of one of the-most-listened-to public radio news and public affairs services in the nation. In 2003, KQED acquired a second FM station — KQEI 89.3 FM, Sacramento — which expanded access to the KQED Public Radio service for listeners in the Sacramento Valley. Since 1990, the KQED Public Radio audience has grown from 300,000 to 725,000 listeners a week, including the combined audiences of KQED and KQEI.
From 1980 – 1989, Wallace was Director of Administration and Planning in the National Public Radio News division. At NPR, she worked with the programming team that developed Weekend Edition Saturday and Sunday and acquired Car Talkand Fresh Air for national presentation by NPR. Before her work at NPR, Wallace was station program manager, WGBH-FM/Boston; general manager, KPFA-FM/Berkeley; and station manager, WYSO-FM/Yellow Springs, Ohio.
From 1998 to 2004, Wallace served two consecutive terms as a member of the NPR Board of Directors, and she was elected the Board’s vice chair in her second term. She currently is serving a third term on the Board of Directors of the Station Resource Group, a national organization of leading public radio stations which focuses on station-based strategic issues. She also is a member of the Board of Directors of EdSource, an Oakland-based organization which serves California public education administrators, teachers and parents with timely reporting and other information about public education issues.
For her contributions to broadcasting and journalism, Wallace has been recognized with an American Women in Radio and Television Award (Golden Gate Chapter), and the Public Radio News Directors’ Leo C. Lee Award.
Wallace is a graduate of Stanford University, with a B.A. in English.
