Exclusive arts coverage, groundbreaking kids programs, hard-hitting documentaries and the Republican presidential debate are all on the docket! Here is a highlight of what KQED Public Television has to offer in March:

The Cat-in-the-Hat-A-Thon
Celebrate Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ birthday with a marathon of the celebrated PBS KIDS program The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! Friday, March 2, at 8am on KQED 9 and at 10am on KQED Plus (Channel 54/cable 10).

Joseph Campbell & The Power of Myth with Bill Moyers
In this two-part series, Bill Moyers interviews Joseph Campbell — the foremost interpreter of the world’s great mythologies who famously collaborated with George Lucas on the Star Wars trilogy. Shot in the library of Lucas' Skywalker Ranch a quarter of a century ago, this series fired the imagination and intellect of millions of people and became a phenomenon. Part 1: Sunday, March 4, at 2pm and Part 2: Sunday, March 11, at 2pm. Both on KQED Plus (Channel 54/Cable 10).

Great Performances: Phantom of the Opera at Royal Albert Hall
In celebration of its blockbuster 25th anniversary year, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh present Phantom of the Opera in a fully-staged, lavish production set in the sumptuous Victorian splendor of London’s Royal Albert Hall. Featuring a cast and orchestra of more than 200, with special guest appearances by the original cast members, this production is a celebration of Broadway’s longest running show ever. Sunday, March 4, at 7pm on KQED 9

Music Week on KQED 9 (March 3–10)
Phantom of the Opera
is just the beginning! KQED is your destination for the most eclectic music programming.  Offerings include:

  • Bing Band Vocalists on the “crooners and canaries” of the 1940s (March 3 at 7pm)
  • My Music: Superstars of Seventies Soul Live, hosted by Patti Lupone (March 3 at 9pm)
  • My Music: Magic Moments — The Best of ‘50s Pop (March 4 at 5pm)
  • Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2 (March 7 at 7:30pm)
  • Great Performances: Tony Bennett: Duets II featuring Aretha Franklin, Lady Gaga, Queen Latifah, Michael Buble and Amy Winehouse, in what became her last recording (March 9 at 8:30pm)
  • Joe Bonamassa: Beacon Theatre — Live from New York featuring the internationally renowned guitarist (March 10 at 9pm).

New Season of Doc Martin on KQED Plus
Martin Clunes returns as the hapless Martin Ellingham, the blood-phobic general practitioner in a sleepy village in Cornwall, who was once a celebrated London surgeon. Don’t miss the new season of this comedic gem beginning Thursday, March 8, at 9pm on KQED Plus (Channel 54/Cable 10).

Republican Presidential Debate 2012
Turn to KQED for coverage of the 2012 election cycle! Candidates vying for the Republican presidential nomination will meet for a live televised debate in Oregon. Monday, March 19, at 6pm on KQED 9. You can also tune in to KQED 88.5 FM for the live broadcast.

Not In Our Town: Class Actions
This hard-hitting program profiles students and community members who are creating change in the wake of the traumatic consequences of racism, anti-Semitism and bullying. Narrated by Yul Kwon. Monday, March 19, at 7:30pm on KQED 9.

Tina Fey: The Mark Twain Prize
A lineup of top entertainers including Steve Carell, Jimmy Fallon, Jennifer Hudson, Steve Martin, Amy Poehler and Betty White salute acclaimed writer, producer, actress and comedienne Tina Fey as she receives the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Monday, March 19, at 10pm on KQED 9

Death and Destruction Day (Tuesday, March 20, on KQED 9)
For the morbidly-inclined! Delve into historic stories of death and destruction with two amazing documentaries:

  • Pompeii: The Last Day. The terrifying last moments of a city caught in a volcanic death trap. (at 8pm)
  • American Experience: Donner Party. Through family journals, newspaper accounts and interviews with historians and descendants of the party, the film recreates the Donner party's infamous 19th-century journey through the Sierras. (at 9pm)

MTT Week on KQED 9 (March 29–April 1)
KQED dedicates this week to San Francisco Symphony’s Michael Tilson Thomas with three amazing programs celebrating his heritage and career. And to celebrate MTT Week, KQED hands its social media accounts to him for the MTT Takeover: Carnegie Hall Edition. Follow us March 29 on Facebook and Twitter to get up-to-the-minute live accounts of MTT’s rehearsals and performance at Carnegie Hall that night!

  • Great Performances: The Thomashefskys: Music and Memories of a Life in the Yiddish Theater. MTT celebrates the legacy of his grandparents Boris and Bessie Thomashefsky, legendary performers of the Yiddish theater. Thursday, March 29, at 8pm.
  • Great Performances: San Francisco Symphony at 100. KQED celebrates the award-winning symphony’s centennial with the television premiere of the rousing gala concert. Friday, March 30, at 9pm.
  • San Francisco Symphony at 100: This compelling documentary tells the story of the orchestra’s creation following the 1906 earthquake and fire. Sunday, April 1, 12 noon.
