Just a day after the loss of one of the world's funniest actors, the legendary Lauren Bacall has passed away at the age of 89 of a stroke. She burst onto the scene in 1944 with To Have and Have Not, matching Humphrey Bogart's star power with her husky voice and no-nonsense attitude. They would later marry and star in a string of noir classics (The Big Sleep, Dark Passage and Key Largo). But her creative and personal collaborations with Bogart aren't the full story. "The only thing that I am not pleased about is when people only talk about 'Bogie' to me as though I had no other life at all," she said on NPR's Morning Edition in 2005, "when I had, unfortunately, many, many more years without him than I did with him."

Bacall went on to juggle being a single mother with being a movie star and Broadway diva. "I remember my oldest son, Steve, saying to me once, 'I don't ever remember seeing you with an apron on.' And I thought, that's right, honey, you did not. That was his concept of what a mother should be."

60 years after her screen debut, she was still taking names in films like Lars von Trier’s Dogville and Jonathan Glazer’s Birth. And she worked right until the very end. "What is the point of working all your life and then stopping?"
