MTV created a space for music videos before evicting them to make room for pregnant teens and tan alcoholics. But two music videos released this week prove that the music video is doing just fine without a channel thank you very much.
Beach House: Wishes
Ever wonder what Eric Wareheim of Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! has been up to in the last few years? Well, the answer is directing a mind-blowing, surreal music video for Beach House. His interpretation of their song "Wishes" comes in the form of a freaky halftime show involving horses, fireworks, shiny capes, and the coup de grace Ray Wise (the DILF from Twin Peaks). There is nothing not to like about this.
The Knife: A Tooth for an Eye
There's something in the water over in Sweden that breeds musical geniuses (Ace of Base, anyone?). After a seven year hiatus, the brother-sister duo the Knife are back with a new record called Shaking the Habitual and this clip for "A Tooth for an Eye," directed by Roxy Farhat and Kakan Hermansson, proves that they've still got it and then some. Along with the video that depicts a young girl leading men out of their machismo and into some passionate choreography, the band released a patriarchy-dissing statement. The very best part of it reads: "The child is powerful, tough and sweet all at once, roaring "I'm telling you stories, trust me." There is no shame in her girliness, rather she possesses knowledge that the men lost a long time ago." A great sentiment on International Women's Day!
