If you're a seafood lover, you may be aware when the salmon or crab seasons begin. What we pay less attention to are small fish, such as herring and anchovies. But without those smaller fish for food, there would be no bigger fish. Not that long ago, California's herring population came perilously close to collapse. While their numbers have been increasing, herring in San Francisco bay are still struggling.
