The quest for 73 has officially reached the home stretch.

With just seven games left in the Golden State Warriors’ season, the defending champions sit firmly on the brink of history -- just five victories away from breaking the ’95-96 Chicago Bulls record of most wins in an NBA season.

The latest, and perhaps greatest, victory came Wednesday night in Utah, when the Warriors gutted out a come-from-behind overtime win against the Jazz, 103-96.

The victory moved the team to 68-7 on the year, breaking the franchise record for most wins in a season, which was set last year when they finished 67-15 en route to a championship.

In a record-setting season full of accomplishments, last night’s “amazing win” just might have been “the most impressive win they’ve had,” according to ESPN reporter Ethan Sherwood Strauss.

The Jazz, a team that had won eight of their last 10 games while battling for a playoff spot, was a tough matchup by themselves. Add in the fact that this was the second game of a back-to-back and that the Warriors arrived at their Utah hotel at 2:45 a.m. Wednesday morning after beating the Washington Wizards Tuesday night in Oakland.

The late night was evident on the court early on. The Jazz led for most of the game, smothering Stephen Curry and company with some of the toughest defense they’ve faced all season. But, when it mattered most, the Warriors responded with clutch play down the stretch.

A burly rebound by Draymond Green, a hustle steal by Shaun Livingston, a momentum-changing "Hack-a-Gobert" call by Steve Kerr, several slick layups by Curry and the absolutely clutch shooting from Klay Thompson -- and this game was over.

Down 3 points with less than 30 seconds left, the Warriors were once again saved by a Splash Brothers’ 3-pointer -- this time delivered by Thompson -- to send the game to overtime. In OT, the Warriors pulled away to secure win number 68.

Despite Golden State beating Utah in all four games they played this season, the Jazz always play well against the Warriors. There’s a strong chance the two teams could meet in the first round of the playoffs, which wouldn’t be the cakewalk the Warriors are hoping for.

"We know if we come back here in a couple of weeks in a playoff series, we know what the atmosphere will be like and how we need to play to win a series like that," Curry said after the game.

The scare on the court was foreshadowed by another scary moment before the game, when four fans fell from the stands after a railing dislodged while they were trying to get a Curry autograph. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Because no Warriors game is complete without some crazy record-breaking stat, here’s the latest:

With Wednesday’s game in the books, all eyes now turn squarely to number 73, and with just seven games remaining, the Warriors are two games ahead of the Bulls’ historic pace.

They also have the best record ever after 75 games, 68-7.

According to FiveThirtyEight, the Warriors have a 97 percent chance of finishing with at least 72 wins and an 85 percent chance of breaking the record and finishing with at least 73 wins. ESPN has both odds slightly lower, at 96 percent and 80 percent chance, respectively, and projects a 73-9 record as the most likely outcome.

Five of the final seven games remaining are at home at Oracle Arena, where the Dubs are undefeated, 36-0 this season, and the owners of an NBA record 55-game home winning streak. Despite that, the schedule down the stretch features a few imposing matchups, on paper at least. Two games against the Spurs remain, with one game on tap April 10 in San Antonio -- where the Spurs are 38-0 this season, setting an NBA record of their own for best home record to start a season.

But word out of San Antonio is that the Spurs, assured of the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference playoffs, may choose to rest some of their aging stars the last two weeks of the season instead of worrying about records. Two games against a Spurs team potentially without Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker would make the path to 73 much easier.

Speaking of rest and preparation for the playoffs, the Warriors have to be strategic as well, as they look to defend their title.

At a recent practice, Warriors center Andrew Bogut said it's about finding balance between chasing the record and another championship.

“It's a tricky situation," Bogut said. "We want to go for [the record] but at the same time, the light at the end of the tunnel is that trophy, so there's no point in going all out right now and running out of gas when it comes playoff time just to get the record.”

Needing to go 5-2 to finish the season, the answer is simple: Win the next five in a row and then take the last two as a restful victory lap.

Or, just keep the foot on the gas and go for 74 ... or 75, and set a record that will last forever.

The Warriors are back in action Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at home against the Boston Celtics, looking for win number 69.
