Update 5:33 p.m. Tuesday:

According to the San Francisco's District Attorney's Office, Christopher Kohrs has been charged with two counts of felony Hit and Run. He will be arraigned on Thursday.

Original Story:

The San Francisco police officer known as the "Hot Cop of the Castro" was on medical leave when he allegedly hit two pedestrians in North Beach and then fled early Sunday morning, the Police Department says.

Christopher Kohrs, 38, is accused of the hit-and-run reported about 2:20 a.m. at Broadway and Montgomery Street in North Beach, according to police.

The pedestrians, two men in their 40s, were crossing Broadway when a Dodge Charger traveling west struck them, police said. They were taken to a hospital, where they remain with injuries considered serious but not life-threatening.

The Dodge driver fled, leaving the car behind. Investigators identified Kohrs, the registered owner of the car, as the driver and he later turned himself in at police headquarters, according to police.

He was booked into county jail on suspicion of two counts of felony hit-and-run. He has since posted bail and is no longer in custody.

Kohrs is currently on unrelated medical leave. If he becomes eligible to return to duty, he would then be suspended pending further investigation, police said.

Kohrs gained social media fame during his time patrolling the Castro District. A Facebook page dedicated to him has more than 52,000 followers. In a post Monday, the fan site's creator said that in light of the media reports about the hit-and-run, "I don't think it's appropriate to keep this page going."

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to call the Police Department's anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or to send a tip by text message to TIP411 with "SFPD" in the message.
