The Metropolitan Transportation Commission confirmed Friday morning what many of you knew — getting on the Bay Bridge is pretty damn hard.
The average speed from U.S. 101 to Treasure Island at the peak of the evening commute was just 4 mph in 2013, according to a new MTC report.
"The most notable is Interstate 80 going to the Bay Bridge. There's only so much space on that road. It's not going to get any bigger, so it's incumbent upon us to use the capacity to the best that we can," said MTC spokesman Randy Rentschler.
Overall, people in the Bay Area are spending more time in traffic than they were in 2010. MTC defines a "congested delay" as time spent in traffic moving at speeds of 35 mph or less. The average commuter spent 2.6 minutes in congestion in 2014, a 37 percent increase over the 1.9 minutes in congestion in 2010. This marks the Bay Area’s highest level of congested delay on a per-commuter basis in at least 15 years.
Increased traffic is also a sign of the Bay's booming economy and rising housing prices.
