Lopez Funeral
Hundreds of mourners filled the Resurrection Parish Church in west Santa Rosa at a mass in Spanish on October 29 for 13-year-old Andy Lopez, who died a week ago when he was shot by a Sonoma County sheriff's deputy. Here, pallbearers, including many of Lopez' classmates, carry his casket into the church. The shooting has outraged many in Santa Rosa, leading some Latino residents to speak out about discrimination in the community. (Rachel Dornhelm / KQED)

8 Washington
The proposed "8 Washington" development on San Francisco's Embarcadero has become a hot-button election issue. Voters are being asked to approve the project in the 2013 election by voting on Prop. B and Prop. C. The ballot measures have polarized San Francisco voters struggling with rising housing costs and concerns over gentrification. As of election time, a private swim and tennis club occupies the site. (Monica Lam / KQED)

closing parks
Opponents of Supervisor Scott Wiener's legislation to close San Francisco's parks rallied outside City Hall on October 29. Many protesters feel the law unfairly targets the homeless, many of whom sleep in the city's parks. Tommi Mecca, director of counseling programs at the Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco, is incredulous that someone would propose closing all city parks at night. “How do you close Golden Gate Park? Put a wall around it?” he said. “We need housing, not park closures.” (Sara Bloomberg / KQED)

google barge
The purpose of Google's mysterious structure sitting on the water off of Treasure Island, across from the Bay Bridge, may have finally be solved. News reports now say the barge "will feature luxury showrooms and a party deck ...  to market Google Glass and other gadgets to invitation-only clients." Earlier speculation had centered on the barge as a floating data center, or floating classrooms to teach tech. CCSF students
More than 200 people rallied at City College of San Francisco's Civic Center location before marching to City Hall on October 31. Protesters delivered 5,000 postcards to Mayor Ed Lee asking him to be more vocal about his efforts to help save the school from closure. (Sara Bloomberg / KQED)

Members of Stand for Security banged drums and chanted slogans outside of the Apple store in Palo Alto. They allege that by subcontracting its security services to Security Industry Specialists, thousands of Silicon Valley security workers are kept as part-time employees — leaving them without benefits.
