Oy. This could be even better than the Harvey Milk Airport thing.
News has broken about a resolution introduced in the Assembly to name the western span of the Bay Bridge, which connects San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island, “the Willie L. Brown Bridge,” after Da Mayor himself.
Which raises the question: Does anyone want to have their name on that thing at this point? Though keep in mind, we’re not talking about the new and troubled eastern span, whose scheduled Labor Day weekend opening is in doubt after being plagued with serious construction problems. No, the Willie L. Brown Bridge would refer to the relatively unproblematic western span, which connects San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island. The eastern span nomenclature is open for suggestions. (The Lindsay Morgan Lohan Bridge? We’re just spitballin’ here.)
From the San Francisco Chronicle …
The measure, Assembly Concurrent Resolution 65, needs a majority vote in the Legislature to take effect. Resolutions do not require a signature of the governor. Caltrans would erect signs with the name once there are sufficient private donations to cover the cost.
[Resolution sponsor and Assemblyman Isadore Hall III, D-Compton] said the California NAACP approached him and asked him to introduce the measure. He said he has not talked to Brown about it.
Here is the full resolution, which was co-sponsored by eight other Assembly members, including Rob Bonta, D-Alameda, Marc Levine, D-San Rafael, and Phil Ting, D-San Francisco. The document basically goes through a long list of accomplishments of the former longtime Assembly speaker and mayor of San Francisco. It doesn’t mention what some would claim is his continuing outsize influence on San Francisco politics and development issues.
Reaction on Twitter has been swift and not so positive … though, you know … Twitter. So you can’t necessarily go by that …

It’s hilariously appropriate 4 new Bay Bridge span that’s $Billions over budget, still can’t open b/c corruption, to be named 4 Willie Brown
