A woman was killed and an officer was hurt in a collision involving a California Highway Patrol cruiser that also critically injured two others on Highway 101 in Palo Alto, authorities said. The crash between the patrol car and an SUV was reported about 6:50 a.m. Friday in the northbound lanes approaching the Oregon Expressway and Embarcadero Road offramp, according to the CHP and Caltrans.

Kevin Grant, a 2009 Bay Area News Group Hometown Hero, is one of three recipients of the California Peace Prize, which includes a $25,000 award. Grant, a city of Oakland violence prevention coordinator, has devoted himself to helping steer people away from crime since he was released from federal prison in 1989.
