As dozens of students and other protesters surrounded them and shouted for their heads, City College of San Francisco trustees voted Tuesday night to invite a special trustee from the state to oversee finances at the troubled school. City College, with 86,000 students the largest public school in the state, is struggling to remain open and accredited.

There is no evidence that Chevron conducted a crucial inspection last year of the segment of the pipe that later ruptured at its Richmond refinery, leading to a fire that destroyed part of the plant, federal investigators said Tuesday. Given the deteriorated condition of the pipe - which had retained only 20 percent of its original wall thickness - Chevron would have been obligated to replace it to comply with the company's own standards, said Don Holmstrom, Western regional office director of the Chemical Safety Board.

Suspended Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi's professional fate will soon be in the hands of his former colleagues on San Francisco's Board of Supervisors, but exactly when that will happen is unclear. The city's Ethics Commission on Tuesday approved its written findings that Mirkarimi committed official misconduct by grabbing his wife's arm hard enough to bruise it during a Dec. 31 argument and later pleading guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment in a deal with prosecutors.

Fire season still has not hit its peak, yet the North Coast has been aflame for weeks with more than 100,000 acres scorched or still burning. Waves of fires have torn through mostly remote and rugged terrain in wildlands such as the Mendocino National Forest and in dry grassland along Highway 101. Lake County has been nearly surrounded by fire, smoke and charred earth.

(A) group of adults who claim they were sexually assaulted as children by the Rev. Jerold Lindner are hoping prosecutors will go after the 68-year-old Los Gatos priest -- the best legal way they can. The deadline to prosecute the cleric for child molestation has long since passed, but Lindner's alleged victims want Santa Clara County prosecutors to file perjury charges against the cleric for allegedly lying under oath in a recent trial.

The San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, which carries more than 16 million motorists each year, will be completely shut down to automobile traffic for two weekends next month. Although the dates haven’t been finalized yet, the bridge — which is part of state Highway 92 — will likely be closed during the weekends of Oct. 19 and 26, according to John Goodwin, spokesman for the Bay Area Toll Authority, a regional body in charge of seven local spans. The closures are expected to take place from about 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for both weekends, Goodwin said.

Authorities raided a West Marin marijuana farm Tuesday, finding about 4,500 plants, a spring-fed irrigation system and rat traps and poison, a sheriff's investigator said. One suspect was being detained on a federal immigration hold while the investigation continued. His name was not released.
