Marti Malloy, who perfected her judo skills at San Jose State University, won an Olympic bronze medal in the sport on Monday.
Malloy beat Portuguese fighter Telma Monteiro who had bested Malloy in their two last meetings. She later fell to Romania's Corina Caprioriu, then came back to overcome Italy's Giulia Quintavalle in the bronze medal match for the 57-kilogram division.
Japan's Kaori Matsumoto later took the gold medal, while Caprioriu won the silver.
