Census data shows that the neighborhood east of 2nd Street and north of King Street, seen here on Tuesday, July 19, 2011, has 46 vacation homes, but only 7 available rental units, one of the highest disparities in the city. The practice of converting private residences into what are effectively hotels is now so common, there are more vacation homes available in some San Francisco neighborhoods than there are housing units available for rent.
