Novato police are investigating over two dozen small fires set this weekend. According to Novato Police Captain Jim Berg, the fires started late Saturday, with the latest incident reported early this morning. The first fire, in a dumpster, was reported around 9 p.m. on Saturday. About 12-15 grass fires were subsequently reported, the last at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

Some time after 9 p.m. on Sunday, officers on patrol came upon approximately six more small fires. At about 1:20 a.m. Monday morning, the largest fire was reported-- 1/2 to 3/4 of an acre in size.

"There’s no obvious signs of natural causation so that is helping us conclude that it is the work of a serial arsonist or arsonists," said Berg.

Besides damage to a PG&E pole and a landscape fence, no structures have been affected. According to Berg, low winds have kept the fires contained despite the dry weather conditions.

Novato police are asking for the public's help with their investigation. Anyone with information can contact Novato Police at (415) 897-1122 or (800) 848-0101.
