Longtime Monday Night Football fans may remember the late Dandy Don Meredith, one of the broadcast’s original trio of announcers, warbling “turn out the lights, the party’s over” after some apparently game-deciding play had occurred. (Listen here.)

The Dandy One would have had a field day during the 49ers’ 20-3 victory over the Steelers last night, as the lights went out — not just metaphorically — twice. The first outage occurred about 10 minutes before kickoff, the second during the second quarter.

In the post-game news conference, Niners’ coach Jim Harbaugh was asked what the mood was like in the locker room before the game.

“Dark,” Harbaugh said.

A view from inside the stadium:

PG&E spokesman Jason King told KQED News intern Vinnee Tong that both outages were the result of problems occurring on city-owned property and not trouble with the utility’s equipment.

The first outage happened due to the failure of a switch designed to shift power from one source to another, King said. He said PG&E doesn’t know yet what caused the second outage. Update 12:45 p.m. PG&E now says it was mistaken in saying that the first outage was caused by a failed switch, equipment that would have been the city’s responsibility. Spokesperson Jason King now says the trouble may have stemmed from a downed power line. They’re still looking into the second outage.
