LOS ANGELES (AP) The Los Angeles Police Department is transferring its investigation into the beating of a San Francisco Giants fan at Dodger Stadium to a special unit that handles high-profile cases.

The probe into the March 31 beating of Bryan Stow had been coordinated by detectives from the LAPD's northeast division, but on Wednesday the department said its central robbery-homicide unit is taking over.

Police say the demands of the case have become more complex and prolonged, and that robbery-homicide detectives are better equipped to handle it. The unit handles most of the city's celebrity and prolonged cases, such as the death of Michael Jackson.

More than two weeks after Giovanni Ramirez was arrested in the case, he has not been charged, though remains jailed on a parole hold.

A call to northeast detectives was not immediately returned.

Last Friday, Ramirez's nine-year-old daughter and her mother spoke publicly in his defense. His daughter said Ramirez was home with her when the attack occurred. She and her mother said the suspect, who has still not been charged in the case but is being held on a parole violation, has never been to a Dodgers' game. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck had no comment on the family's statements, saying, ""My job is not to prepare a case for the media. My job is to prepare a case in court," according to the LA Times. Ramirez has taken two lie detector tests, results of which have not been released. He also was identified in a lineup, according to police and his defense attorney, who claims the identification was erroneous.
