Giants’ catcher Buster Posey’s leg was broken last night in a collision at home plate. Watch a video of the collision as well as a discussion on the wisdom of allowing catchers to be exposed to severe injury during plays at the plate.

Update May 28: Yesterday Posey participated in a conference call with three local sportswriters. Transcript of that call plus a video of another violent collision at the plate Posey got the worst of back when he was in the minor leagues, right here.

Update 3:25 p.m. After fans watched the collision at home between Scott Cousins and Buster Posey last night, they tweeted their dismay. Follow the course of events as expressed online in the following curation of tweets and other web material, put together by our Online Community Engagement Specialist Ian Hill.

Update 11:30 a.m. The Panda may have put his paw in his mouth in speaking about Posey’s injury. An hour ago Pablo Sandoval tweeted this:

“Good morning I feel so bad because we lost buster for rest of the season it’s gonna be hard with out him”

Then 45 minutes later:

“Talking further within our team, I might have misspoken and hopefully Buster isn’t out for the season”

Still, it doesn’t look good. From MLB.com:

Catcher Buster Posey has a broken bone in his lower left leg, the Giants revealed on Thursday, meaning the worst has happened: The National League’s reigning Rookie of the Year will likely be sidelined for the entire season. Club sources didn’t explicitly divulge Posey’s condition, which wasn’t expected to become fully known until he undergoes a MRI. But before the Giants’ announcement, multiple insiders did speak of Posey’s leg with an absence of hope. The injury might include torn ligaments.

You can watch the collision in stunned, sickening silence at MLB.com.

This morning, Buster Olney of ESPN recorded this video blog calling for major league baseball to take measures to protect catchers on plays at the plate.

And Rick Sutcliffe and Aaron Boone weigh in on the topic of collisions at the plate on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight. The question: “Are plays like this the doom of the franchise catcher?” (Posey’s agent thinks so.)
