Santa Cruz’s James Durbin Off ‘American Idol’

[Update, Friday 3 p.m.: James Durbin will appear Saturday at a hometown celebration at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. ]

Here’s a shocker, and a distinct bummer, if you’re a fan of Santa Cruz’s own James Durbin: He was voted off “American Idol” this evening. The show is not even airing yet in the Pacific time zone, and he’s history. He was a fan favorite for many reasons, including the fact he’s overcome diagnoses of Asperger’s and Tourette’s syndromes to become a serious contender in the “Idol” competition.

Here’s an excellent earlier post, with radio audio, from KQED’s Rachel Dornhelm on what Durbin means to Santa Cruz: ‘A Different American Idol.’

I am a 63 woman- not your average American Idol viewer. I fell in love with James Durbin. If he were in concert, I would pay to see him. And that is saying a lot- we have many performers here in the Black Hills- especially during the Sturgis Ralley- and I rarely go to a concert.

What an awesome entertainer. I was moved by all of his performances and watched them multiple times on re-play.

I was shocked by his elimination tonight. I won’t watch the rest of the season, as I am so disappointed, not so much in the performers, but in America’s choice of music.

Hey James- I can understand your grief at being voted off- what is America thinking!

Rock on- your our my favorite of all the American Idol seasons.

Long live rock- you glow James- keep on doing what you have been doing!!!

    Carol R.

    • Rachel

I was at work when the results were on, and I could tell by the look on my mom’s face when I got home that my favourite contestant EVER was gone. BULL America. What are you people thinking?

Carol, I’m done watching also. It’s a disappointment that America got this so wrong. Scotty’s good too, but hearing he was in the bottom two leaves me with little hope for America’s voters. They will just keep voting for Haley, who mouths off to the judges and expects them to bow to her after ever performance. So I guess this is what America sees as an Idol now. SICK people. Absolutely wrong.

    • Valerie

I too am in my 60′s – although just ;-)
I have watched idol from the beginning and most often the right people win, and the right people get voted off (remember I said MOST often and this is also just in my opinion) … however there have been numerous amounts of upsets. Losing James is probably the biggest one I have seen. Sure I hated to see Pia go, and Casey too – based on talent they had enough in their little pinky’s to be in the finals. As did Daughtry; Adam and I think Katherine McPhee.
Idol is first a singing competition, pure and simple. Hence the auditions and Hollywood week. Absolutely the judges are looking for the complete package as well – but first do they have the vocals needed??
After that it becomes a popularity contest. Who touches your heart? You do you connect with? Or who do you have a crush on?
American Idol is a wonderful show – and while I am really upset at the loss of James, who am I kidding that I won’t watch next week? Or go to the tour with my kids.
I am hooked – have been for 10 seasons ….. and while the votes often confuse me …. I am still a fan of the show. This year the judges in particular.
The best way to vote now for those that have left (and still those that remain) is in album sales. Remember Taylor Hicks? He won – but lost his contract with 19 shortly after …. his album sales tanked big time.
It’s all about money – so show them how much you care and how much you don’t via downloads – and so forth ….. it truly does matter!

I’m through with American Idol. The voting system is just plainly flawed when a performer like James Durbin doesn’t have enough votes???? I don’t buy it for a minute. All I can hope for is that mouthy, trashy, disrespective, conceited, screaming in your face Haley gets smacked down next! She is defintely not Idol material. Just a spoiled, pouting little brat. Look at the mean spiteful looks on her face when camera pans to her. She is so happy when someone is voted off she can barely contain herself. Disgusting. Wake up America. Screaming not singing does not denote talent!

      • Andrea Hendrickson

The other contestants looked like deer caught in headlights. James was the best no doubt. I wish I knew I could vote for 2 hrs like Lauren’s brother did. Scotty deserves to be a star, Haley doesn’t, Lauren does when she’s ready, James already is!! I only watched Idol cause I caught a glimps of James performances then got hooked, I play them over and over. I’ll only watch idol in hopes of seeing more of James!!!!!!!

      • ZadaJoan

I agree with so many of the others….I’m 70 and hooked on James Dubin’s performances. Scotty is ok but certainly not star quality as of yet. Haley seems to have a chip on her shoulder especially when she talked back to the judges. Lauer is good but still too young. “Not a Lady” that’s for sure but gaga was trashy so I was glad I could fast forward her.

James is a real performer…can’t believe he didn’t get enough votes from America….something doesn’t add up.

i am also 63 and totally agree with you. i also think i will stop watching at least this season. my vote would not go through. something is wrong here.

  • Dan Brekke

Carol — that’s quite a tribute. It’s amazing how much some of these performers touch people.

  • debbie

I can no longer consider American Idol a singing competition. I will not watch the finals, I think they make it a habit of causing upsets. I cant beleive out of all those thousands of votes haley and lauren beat James…. First Pia now James they will both have a better carrer then the winner that seems to be a trend . Disgusted !!!!!

  • Tess

I am HEARTBROKEN that James is no longer on Idol. He was the ONLY reason I watched every week. The ONLY reason I’ll watch the final is to see him sing again (so I’ll record the show and fastforward through everything else!). I will miss hearing him every week and will miss downloading all his songs to listen to every week. I am CRUSHED. The problem is that I live in Canada and I’m not allowed to vote. The American Public has NO idea about what talent is, what consistency is… voting off James is proof of their ignorance. Not sure I can ever watch the show again. This is a travesty plain and simple. I hope James is signed and I will buy every single one of his CD’s. James, I miss you already. :(

  • Dan Brekke

Tess, you need to get a campaign going to include Canadian viewers in the vote!

  • Suzie

I will no longer watch Idol. Just not the same without Simon either. He was the only judge who would give his honest opinion. James was the most talented of them all without a doubt. He is an entertainer & has an amazing voice. I know this is not the last we have heard of James Durbin.

  • Cindy

I’m so bummed out to see James got kicked off. He was the only reason I watched this season as well. I could care less now about the entire show. James Durbin was the best talent that show had in years. It being a huge injustice is more than and understatement. I’m so disgusted right now. America you should be ashamed. Real pure talent doesnt get put through, and Scotty looks like the kid on the cover of Mad Magaize. What a joke! The three left dont even compare to James. I wont even continue to watch the show. I just checked out on Idol. To heck with it!

  • Tracy

I’m so done!!! James by far should have won American idol! He rocked and amazed every time he sang! He never took the the judges words to hurt only to help. Unlike one girl left on there that truly shows her displeasure and the other one well don’t get me started. As for Scotty he is well never mind. This is one Canadian’s feelings and I’m disgusted. I’m never going to watch this messed show again :( I will still support James!!!! I will buy his cd’s! Love you James!!! Your my Idol!

  • Sarah

I also will not be watching American Idol !!!! Cant believe it…He should have won all ,,,,

  • Sharon

What a deeply disappointing result tonight. Not only is James the most talented in the top 4, he put so much into each performance, and it always showed. He was exciting to watch, wonderful to listen to, and a true inspiration in terms of following your dreams and overcoming challenges. I won’t be watching the rest of the season, but I will be watching out for James to release a CD or go on tour. My family only watched American Idol this season because of James. Rock on!

  • Darlene

I have never watched American Idol until this season because I couldn’t stand the brashness of Simon Cowell. This season I watched and enjoyed until this evening. I was certain James Durbin would win. I felt there was much talent but the two who truly stood out was James Durbin and Jacob who was eliminated last week. Who votes on this show? Who is the audience? For this audience to let the true stars slip away is something I do not have in common. I hope they find true success because they truly deserve it. American Idol is another scam show like dancing with the stars. It is a popularity contest and not a talent contest. The voting should be left for the judges who truly have the intelligence to make the call, not the public. Figures it would be a FOX network show that would leave me this disappointed as I find most of their political shows to be appauling as well.

  • rebeka

America where were you when james needed your votes the most! I am so dissapointed, first pia, now james, what the hell is going on? He was one of the best performers that ever got on that stage, there will never be no one like james, he should of won.. how haley get more votes than james, out of 70million votes, this doesn’t make any sense. Anyways james is still #1 even if he didn’t win idol..

    • Ms. J

Trust me..there’s something going on.. since the year of Adam Lambert, it’s been questionable.. remember when At&t had s promo on new phones right before finals that year? free phones = free texting..
This year, since Pia’s week, it would always be difficult to get to the dedicated line of an idol.. during Jacob Lusk’s week, I experimented trying to vote for two other idols contestants. It was so easy to get through the lines of the others while took the 2 hours required to even clock in more than 5 votes!!! I tried my best last Wednesday for James and the same thing was happening.. it can’t be trusted anymore which is a hard fact. We all may be rooting for the contestant who seem to have all the qualities and the talent to rightfully be called ‘american idol’ and yet never makes it.. We can only hope that with that kind of talent (Casey, Jacob, Pia, James) that authentic producers watched and know what real talent is :-)

  • Tara

I am a senior lady who thinks James Durbin was the most talented contestant ever.
Not only was he talented, he put his heart and soul into every performance. I will not
be watching to see who ‘wins.’ There’s something seriously wrong when the most
talented are voted off. Perhaps it’s just a popularity contest with these young folks who can vote an unlimited amount of times; perhaps voting for the one who got criticized by the judges. Haley was obnoxious last night…so why did so many want to vote for her?
Makes no sense. I’ve read that many folks had a problem with her picture popping up when they tried to vote for James. So, what is the problem? Is there a glitch in the voting procedures? Are the voters just stupid when it comes to recognizing talent??
I think if you want to have a true ‘talent contest’, perhaps qualified judges should choose. American Idol, you’d best fix these problems, if you want to continue.
James, I wish nothing but the best for you and your family. I think you will become a
huge star without the AI title. Look at Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson! Some smart
production company should sign you up fast! Good Luck!!

    • JEAN

Haley needs to go home! You are so right about the voting. I will not watch the rest of the show. I will buy everything on Itunes by James Durbin

  • Kellie Young

Can’t believe James was voted off. A true performer – put heart and soul into everything he did. He captivated his audience and lit up the stage everytime he performed. He will go far with or without idol. But it was a sad end to the evening. Left me in tears to see such a great talent leave. Voting is definitely messed up and Idol needs to look at that. Judges input should amount for something in the voting. They know talent!!!!

  • Betty Davis Eyes

James gone?! What a crying same!! I am not watching American Idol anymore!! The people voting are clearly all Southern, bible belt, confused, close minded, country lovers. Anyone with anything interesting and unique going on have been voted off the show. Casey, Paul, Naima and James should start a band and say fuck it. Really sad and pathetic. I guess cool people are not watching the show!! Come to think of it……Why am I? Oh yeah, I injured my back and have nothing better to do……..I did not have a tv for 5 years………now I am bored and at my parents……….all makes sense
now………Do not care never watching the show again………………….

    • Becky

Speaking of close minded, I’m from the south and have never liked country music. I’ve voted for James every week..he was by far the most talented contestant they had…sang from his soul. Honestly, in a way, I’m glad he didn’t win. Now he won’t be stuck with the AI recording contract. It sure hasn’t done much good for the past few winners of AI..by the way, who were they??? That ought to tell you something.
By the way, you probably need to stay at your parents house…sounds like you don’t have enough sense to be out on your own.

    • Proudsouthern

BettyDaivsEyes. You are rude and trashy. Do you find it impossible to comment without insulting a whole area of the country? And where are you from? The gutter? You have a trashy mouth, get a life you creep.

  • bert

James and Haley should be in the finals….the rest were too boring….Scooty and Lauren boooooo

  • lynn

JAMES, will become a star anyway..such talent..but JAMES is in good company look what the American Public did to Adam last season. All the most talented are voted out..The American Public wouldnt know talent if it hit them in the face.In every performance he JAMES was praised..WHAT happened..the public should in no way be in any part of the voting, thats what JUDGES are for, talented people judging other talented people. The public seems to be fickeled, and ignorant about this show..JAMES WILL GO FAR…i hope the show changes because as of now i will never watch the show again…SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT….there is a dishonesty about the show now..whats really going on with these votes.????…Im disgusted and totally dissapointed.but like I said JAMES WILL BE A STAR ANYWAY .without the help of Idol..Look how far ADAM has come with his amazing talent. And theres not many Idol winners that do as well as the ones that are voted off.SO JAMES THIS MAY BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE..TAKE IT AND RUN..

James is the winner as far as I am concerned…Haley needs to grow up, and lose the attitude. She can’t handle the truth…Scotty is good, Lauren is good, but James was above and beyond good…Good luck to him, and Another Idol fan now gone! Done with Idol!!!

  • AI

    buhuhuhuhuhuhuhu … lol

  • Les

They may have shown too much Durbin family footage the night of his performance. This could have put the damper on his image overall unfortunately as ‘the’ American idol desired profile or persona. Doesn’t seem that folks want their version of the American idol to be a family man or woman; mom and dads are ok, wife and kid(s), no…

  • Kelly

I will not watch it the rest of the season, James was ripped off. BUT, I hope he goes on in his career and sells more records than the remaining three. I believe someone will sign him to a record label here soon. Keep our fingers crossed for James, He deserves it, the other three suck…………..

  • http://blogs.kqed.org/newsfix/2011/05/12santa-cruzs-james-durbin-boted-off-american-idol/ Dodi

    Hi~ James
REMEMBER………… It was a myth ledgend…..but powerful in the conveyance of it’s message…..the story is about a bird supposedly had died and turned into ashes….but because of it’s strength and perservance it raised itself back up from it’s ashes.
American Idol is unfair due to it’s allowance of letting people vote as many X’s as they want, this allows all types of riffraff to vote for the less talented artist’s. Vocally Scotty is equal w/James ……….BUT……. performance wise………James brings a distinct AURA to the stage that Scotty cannot match. There definetly needs to be a ceiling put on the voting, because it is so unfair to the truly talented artist that deserve to be there. I too am through w/ American Idol (unless) it will revise it’s voting regulations. James I prayed last night that God’s Grace be with you for bigger and better things beyond Idol……….Idol is just a stepping stone………Love ya! / dodi/SC

  • Connie

James Durbin, you ROCK! Keep on Keepin’ on. This is NOT the end of your road!!!

  • Karen Mills

Anyone else have trouble voting for James this week? Several times when I called, the connection went weird and I had to start over. I live on the west coast and my sister lives on the east coast and it happened to both of us. Very strange but I smell a rat. James deserved to be this year’s American Idol. Now I will just wait to buy his music and see him in concert.

    • Ms. J

OMG Karen!! I just wrote a reply under ‘Rebeka’ and was telling her about the same thing!!! I started observing that during Top 8 when we were trying to vote for Pia Toscano.
Part of my original reply above was:
      >> There’s something going on.. since the year of Adam Lambert, it’s been questionable.. remember when At&t had s promo on new phones right before finals that year? free phones = free texting!!!!!!

Does this surprize anyone? You have all your little teeney boopers out there being able to vote 200+ times. We should only be allowed to vote once. Last three seasons or maybe more they have voted the wrong one in. Where are your last 3 american idols and their supporters. James was a performer and I looked forward to seeing what he was going to do each week. No interest for me to watch american idol after this. James don’t give up – you will do well and I for one will support you. Good luck.

  • rose

I also had a problem voting for James. A weird noise came on the line multiple times when I tried to vote. What a shame. The kid will go far as I think J-lo will help him.

  • GAIL

Haley is nothing more than a one hit wonder. She should have been gone along time ago. Her singing is something compared to nails on a chalk board when she tries to reach the notes that are far out of her reach and her growling doesn’t make anyone want to listed to her either. I for one will not buy any of her music and I think she will fade into the back ground faster than a shadow at sundown

    • Ms. J

And that kind of attitude will NOT go far in the business.
Did you notice earleir on that one of the mentors Jimmy Iovine already called on her lack of respect and told her that ‘what he was saying was for her own good..observations are part of constructive criticism’. I can’t stand her when the camera pans on her face soon as a contestant gets voted off.. it’s painful to watch, you can see what’s inside! Unfortunately, with James Durbin now gone, she’s actually standing a chance. But the post-Idol show support will show the truth.. Go James! And same for Jacob, Casey and Pia — your talent will get you far!

  • GAIL

James has been consistent the entire time on AI and has been an amazing musician. He works three times as hard as everyone else combined! I can not believe that he’s gone and saddened that America has let him down. This is absolutely the most ridiculous season with the antics of Steven Tyler and J-Lo afraid to give an ounce of criticism. Randy is Randy and will always try to throw his two cents in, but he needs to get rid of the tiring pet names of “dawg” and “dude” especially when he is referring to the women! Give it a rest! I too am not watching the final 3 though I love Lauren, I don’t think she even begins to compare to James. WE LOVE YOU JAMES! Hang in there because you will soar and go beyond your wildest dreams!!!!

  • Kaitlyn

Unfortunately, I think people forget that they are supposed to vote for the person they want to WIN. There are too many people calling in “pity” votes, just because they feel bad that a contestant got bad remarks from the judges, or something. People think “Oh, everyone else is going to vote for James” (or Chris Daughtry, or Pia, or Casey, or whoever shouldn’t have gotten voted off when they did), so they vote for their next favorite because they think no one else will. I really believe that’s why James got voted off. I consider him to be the BEST, by far, and he absolutely should have won. Almost from the beginning of this season, I expected the finale to be James and Casey. I’m so disappointed that they are both gone now and that people can’t seem to vote correctly. I agree with another poster who said that we should only be allowed one vote. I won’t be voting anymore. I have to say that all of the contestants that are left, are good singers, I have nothing against them. BUT, none of them can compare with the talent of James. He should NOT have been the one to go home this week. I hope he gets a chance to read some of the comments about him, so that he knows that the public loves his music.

    • melissa nelson

Kaitlyn – I couldn’t have said this better. Please read my take on the voting below. And maybe they should follow the lead of “America’s Got Talent” – no more than 10 votes. But they need Ryan to say “73 Million Votes Last Night”….who cares when the votes were wrong!!???!! I am losing my interest in this show.

  • Melanie

I think this is crap…Haley should have went home! She has an attitude every week when the judges basically tell her she sucks…who wants to listen to someone that sounds like a dog when they sing!! James should never have went home! I’m telling you quite frankly this show is rigged some how! Why would Ryan Seacrest bring up Chris Daughtry after all this time about him going home when there were only 4 left? He has never said it before and now James is gone…also if you looked at the judges faces they didn’t seem surprised why is that? Because everyone already knew he was done for! Well American Idol has one less viewer I will never waste my time watching that crap again!!!

    • Midwest

I agree that it is now rigged. In the beginning all of the final girls were getting voted off and there was talk that they really don’t want a male to win again this year. Haley is a horrible and sleazy singer. I think being voted off now will actually be better for Durbin. He won’t be tied to AA as long and I would bet there are labels and groups who would love to team up with him.

  • melissa nelson

I believe the Idol producers have much to do with this travesty! For obvious reasons they wanted James to open and close the show. But for whatever reason they “tried something new this week” as Ryan put it and gave James the extension numbers of “01″ and “05″ instead of “01″ and “08″ where he actually performed. Nice going!!! Americans were clearly confused this week, but maybe for a valid reason. Also, when I tried James’ “05″ extension, I only received some some of “entering the incorrect code” message. I have never gotten this message in all the years I have been voting. And in two hours, I was only able to register 3 votes on his “01″ extension. Something’s messed up here – I will no longer waste my time voting, and if they do not soon fix their NUMEROUS voting flaws, I will stop watching all together. For now, one word for you James Durbin: “DAUGHTRY”!

  • tuff tuff

I am still in pain that james durbin was voted off. It seems to me that when the judging gets to this stage it should be put in the hands of the pros, steven-jennifer-and barry. When james came out to sing, each and every time,he owned that stage. The tears in jennifer’s eyes said it all. james has such a presence on stage. I know God has a plan for james and it will not end here. unless AI makes some drastic changes with this voting, i have watched my last show as of may 12,2011. I love scotty too. he reminds me of randy travis and josh turner. He will do well also’. AI really blew it this time, big time. just for the record I am 70yrs. old. As big a deal as AI is surely there is something you can do to right this injustice…….

  • http://www.lilqueenie.com Adrienne

James was ripped.. he should have won.. the second best Scotty..
The best never wins first.. and the first never usually is remembered or does a good album.
    Go James.

  • http://-------- E. L. MCCARTHY

I AM CRYING FOR JAMES DURBIN, NO WAY SHOULD HE BE GONE FROM THE SHOW!! HE WAS PHENOMINAL, SHOWED SO MUCH HEART AND DEPTH OF EMOTION. I DON’T CARE FOR EITHER OF THE GIRLS. MAY NEVER WATCH AGAIN UNLESS THEY CLEAN UP THE VOTING PROGRAM.

  • http://-------- E. L. MCCARTHY

    WHERE IS MY COMMENT?

  • Autumn

Count me in as a woman over 50 who fell in love with James. I havn’t watched Idol for 3 years. It became boring. I tuned in to see Tyler and J-Lo in action and got hooked into James from his first audition. Each week his performance excited me. He is something special. He took songs I have heard for years and did something unique with them. His mind thought up these crazy sets, such as the marching band gig for the song “Uprising.” In my opinion, he’s the best Idol contestant EVER. He put his heart and soul on that stage every show. I will not watch the rest of the year now. There is no reason to. The last three are boring. Also, there were problems with the phone lines on Wednesday night and I think James got screwed. Many people couldn’t call in (including me.) and that should be looked into. James got the sham as well as the rest of us who really enjoyed him. Lorraine has no personality and too much fake hair, Scotty sings the same songs over and over again – he’s turning cartoonish and Haley can sing well every 3rd song or so. James sang everything perfectly. He’ll be missed, but I’ll buy his first album… something I wouldn’t do for the remaining hacks.

  • Jan

I cried when I saw James voted off. Wake up America – he was never in the bottom and never had a bad review. He was so entertaining and every week I couldn’t wait to see what he brought to the table. He could sing anything . I’m soooooo done watching Idol.. James had more talent in his pinky finger than the last 3 put together. Haley, I can’t stand – what a spoiled brat – she might as well be a hooker – cuz she sure knows how to use her legs to apparently still be in the competition. She’s always dressed flaunting her legs knowing that at least the guys will vote for her. Wake up America!!!! It’s about talent – and watching James and all the background during his perfomances was like you were already watching his concert. Pissed Off!!!

i’m so mad over james being gone. haley still being there is very disappointing. she’s a inconsiderate brat. i wanted to slap that look off her face when the judges was telling her their opinion. lauren has a better voice than haley. james shouldive won it. he is so talented. he better get a record deal from someone. someone has to take his talent. my hopes was on scotty and james . now james is gone. i wanted james as the american idol and than scotty follow him. i wanted them to be the last two standing up there.

i just hate it i loved james and his little family i will not be watching any more of it and what was this crap when lorna elaina ask her brother to make sure he voted he said he would be voting the whole 2 hours i thought there was a limit on how many times you could vote from one phone number ???? if they are stuffing the ballot that hardly seems fair to anyone they need to limet the number of times a person can vote from one number!!!

Many did vote for James online after discovering the telephone system problem. How many votes were false? We have no idea. But fans are demanding a recount.

yes alot of us baby boomers don’t text and our votes did not go through. i tried on my landline and cell phone.

  • unforgetable 501

james was voted off do to his lack of talent ……………..

    • Kathy

I’d like to know when unforgetables appointment is for his miracle ear.

    • NJ

Guess you know talent the same way you know english. “Do” should be “due”……….

  • Kathy

I want to know if anyone else saw Haley mouth “I’m going to win this” when she heard James was voted off.

  • Janet

Have a feeling American Idol will have far less viewers this week since the most talented was voted off!!!! Let’s face it – there is flawed voting and they need to change it or we will continue to have American Idol winners that you never hear from again!!!! Chris who????? Taylor who?????? Ruben who???????
But we will hear from James !!!!!!

    • patricia

i agree with you. i hope everyone who is a fan of james boycotts it this week. i am sure james will do well regardless but the fact that that these 3 are in the finals is hard to believe. i may have missed it but i didn’t hear any feed back from the judges. the fact that haley is still on just astounds me. there are certainly problems with the voting.

    Dear James,

“I’ll Be There For You” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” with me at the “Uprising” I feel as I get “Closer To The Edge” and realize American Idol continues “Without You”.

“Saturday Night’s Alright” as we celebrate your homecoming with Santa Cruz on this May 14th .

“Living In The City” with all this “Heavy Metal”, “Maybe I’m Amazed” that America did not get your sweet “Love Potion #9”, like I did.

“Don’t Stop Believing” for one second as I say to American Idol “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin” as you ask “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” and I reply NOT A CHANCE! as you allow this most talented contestant leave your stage.

    A Fan Forever,
    Cate

I guess this is a james durbin lovefest only. I have been searching for the blog on his performance in santa cruz yesterday. I am positive that i am not the only one. After he arrived 45 min late and the host exhorted the audience to chant his name or he wouldn’t get out of the car ??? The audience did it, albeit weakly. Really, santa cruzans are not such puppets. He gets on stage and he keeps it up for a full 10 minutes. Trying to get the audience to clap and cheer, then he sits down to tell us a story which we could only hear every third word [ mic issues i guess??] After 5 more min. of that people around me were muttering ,’ just sing’. Finally after forever he opened with.’will you still love me’. Are you kidding me ?? Seriously ? I came to see a rock act. After 1 minute of that, i split. I saw that his 2nd choice was ‘ My guitar gently weeps’ on the news and they let it play…what a mess…he walks around and around crooning at the end and it just wasn’t good. He is a great singer but i hope he watches his play back and modifies his performances ! Because rock fans do not suffer ego maniacs BEFORE stardom. You don’t need to ask fans to cheer for you when you are established James. Watch any videos of your heroes. Crowds erupt. So next time sing some rock and roll and preferrably an original and wow us with talent not this commercialized pap. Who is your audience anyway ??
    a dissapointed fan-

I don’t think he acted like that on stage because of a big ego, i think it relates to his autism and social issues. Being nervous, i don’t know, but he has always been so humble.
