Last night crews completed work early on the latest Bay Bridge tower section. From the Bay Bridge web site:
Progress on the Self-Anchored Suspension Span continues to surge as crews lifted the fourth group of tower sections ahead of schedule. The last of four pieces was placed at 1:25 a.m., Friday morning, March 4 — nearly a day ahead of schedule. The tower now stands at 480 feet, 91 percent of its final 525-foot height. The next section is a single steel segment that will connect the four independent legs at the top of the tower, which will be placed in the spring.
KTVU has a report that includes some cool time-lapse video, and KGO has one with some nice shots from overhead.
And here’s an animated video and audio slideshow of the sequence of steps in replacing the bridge’s eastern span.
