Community groups in San Jose are rallying today over the city manager’s selection for the next chief of police.

City manager Debra Figone had narrowed the search to two candidates, Oakland Police Chief Anthony Batts and acting San Jose Chief Chris Moore. On Thursday, Batts announced that he had not been selected. While the city manager’s office would not confirm that Moore has been chosen, Figone is expected to present a final candidate to the city council and mayor on Tuesday for a vote.

Community activist Walter Wilson says groups are concerned that Figone isn’t following through with a fair selection process. “We think she should be presenting two candidates to the city council so they can make the best choice.”

At a community meeting last night, a thousand people joined People Acting in Community Together and several other groups to ask for improvements in police- community relations.

San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed was there to respond and said he would not support a police chief that didn’t take racial profiling seriously.
