On today's California Report Magazine, Scott Shafer interviews rock music critic Joel Selvin, familiar to Bay Area fans as the Chronicle's longtime music critic, who retired in 2009.

In discussing his new book, Smart Ass: The Music Journalism of Joel Selvin, a compilation of pieces from the Chronicle and other publications, Selvin touched on California music figures like Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, Merle Haggard, the Grateful Dead, Steve Miller, and Tom Waits.
