Rob Hartman, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service's California-Nevada River Forecast Center, told the Chronicle that the storms that will hit the Bay Area starting Friday will be a "significant weather event."

The Palo Alto Daily News says the city of San Carlos is handing out free sandbags to residents and businesses.

The sand and shovels can be picked up 24 hours a day at the parking lot of the San Carlos Corporation Yard, 1000 Bransten Road. Each household or business can take up to 10 bags...

During the rainy season, sandbags are also typically available at the following locations:

• 1925 Embarcadero Road in Palo Alto

• Alma Street at Burgess Drive and Pope Street at Laurel Avenue in Menlo Park

• Leong Drive at Moffett Boulevard and 231 N. Whisman Road in Mountain View

• 150 Tara Road in East Palo Alto.

Follow all the upcoming weather action on the local National Weather Service site, and at the Watches, Warnings and Advisories section of the California Nevada River Forecast Center. That one has gale warnings, freezing fog advisories, winter storm watches, and everything else that will make you want to hide under the covers until it's all over.
