If you haven't seen this yet, it's really worth a look. In the wake of the Bell scandal, the State Controller's Office has put up a database of local-government salaries, which makes for some fascinating reading. Browse the cities, listed in alphabetical order, and hit "View Data" to select one. Then, to work yourself into what will no doubt be a frothing fit, click on the "Annual Maximum Salary" to rearrange the jobs to display in order of remuneration.

In San Francisco, Numero Uno on the list is the head of MUNI, who makes $315,140. I would say "no comment," but that would sound like a comment...
