False reports of an active shooter prompted a panicked audience to flee San Francisco's SHN Orpheum Theatre Friday night during a performance of the musical “Hamilton.” Four people were injured and taken to the hospital.

At 9:51 p.m., during the performance, a woman in the audience had a medical emergency. A bystander treated the victim with an automated external defibrillator, which triggered an alarm.

To add to the confusion, the medical incident coincided with a gun shot in the play and an audience member shouted, "gun," according to an account on Twitter.

In the panic to exit the theater, three adults suffered injuries with one person breaking a leg and two people suffering moderate injuries.

The San Francisco Fire and Police Departments responded to the incident and confirmed it was not due to an intentional act.

The three people injured were transported to a local hospital, along with the original patient who suffered the medical emergency, who was eventually revived. She was in critical condition Friday night, according to the fire department.

The Hamilton cast evacuated as well, and a video posted to Twitter shows them returning after the chaos subsided. Theater-goers went back into the theater to retrieve items they left behind.

"The producers of "Hamilton" and SHN are reviewing the events that brought an abrupt end to the performance in San Francisco last night and resulted in alarm and confusion for the audience at the SHN Orpheum Theatre," Scott Walton, a spokesperson for SHN, told KQED in an email. "Along with SHN, the owners of the Orpheum, we remain dedicated to protecting the safety of our audiences and our own company members in every city where Hamilton plays."

Walton said SHN is in the process of contacting attendees to invite them back for another performance of the hit-musical at the Orpheum.
