The men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard did not receive their paychecks on Tuesday.

Now Bay Area food banks are stepping in to help.

The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank plans to help dozens of U.S. Coast Guard workers and their families who live in Novato's Hamilton neighborhood, while the Second Harvest Food Bank is offering support for furloughed government workers in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

In what may be the first case of an admiral subtweeting, commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Karl Schultz did not seem pleased about the prolonged partial government shutdown.
