Vaping Marketed to Youth
This week, the Food and Drug Administration announced a nationwide crackdown on retailers who sell e-cigarettes to minors. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than two million students in high school and middle schools reported using them in the past month. We talk to Dr. Mark Rubinstein from UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital about how e-cigarettes are marketed to youth, and we hear from student reporter Javaria Khan about why students at her school use e-cigarettes.

Legal Analysis: DACA and Travel Ban
On Tuesday, a federal judge ruled against the Trump administration's move to end DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, a program that protects from deportation some undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. Judge John Bates said that the program must remain in place and accept new applications. The Trump administration has 90 days to challenge the ruling. Also this week, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on a case involving the Trump administration’s travel ban on travelers from predominantly Muslim countries. We talk to professor Rory Little of UC Hastings College of the Law.

Students Sound Off on School Lunch
The good, the bad and the ugly: Bay Area high school students bring us their reporting on what’s on their plates. One student says the school cafeteria frequently runs out of food and doesn’t have enough options for students who don’t eat red meat. Another student questioned the quality and freshness of her school’s lunch offerings. But another student says an innovative partnership with local farms has yielded good produce options at her school. Our panel of students took photos and conducted interviews as part of their reporting.

Guests:

  • Angel Brady, Fremont High School
  • Alina Jafri, Santa Clara High School
  • Stephanie Murphy, San Leandro High School
