Have Alzheimer's Researchers Been on the Wrong Track for 30 Years?

STAT's "Signal" podcast has put up its latest episode, called "Choosing scientific sides in the fight against Alzheimer's."

The segment takes a look at the controversy around the theory that the buildup in the brain of a protein called beta amyloid is a key cause of Alzheimer's. This is called "the amyloid hypothesis." For almost 30 years, STAT says, researchers have targeted the protein in trying to fight the disease.

But "the industry as a whole has so far struck out," STAT says. "Out of 244 drugs tested between 2002 and 2012, only one successfully got to market."

And not all scientists agree the amyloid hypothesis is even correct. Listen below ...
