San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr is beginning his fifth year at the helm of a police department facing a number of scandals. Recent reports show that the disparity between whites and blacks arrested in the city has grown 50 percent despite a shrinking African-American population. This comes after reports surfaced in March that 14 officers had been exchanging racist and homophobic text messages. And most recently, the department is being criticized for failing to investigate the theft of a federal agent’s gun — a weapon that was used in the fatal shooting at Pier 14. Despite these and other controversies, Suhr has the support of the mayor and the board of supervisors.
