Congressman Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican and majority whip of the U.S. House of Representatives, is the frontrunner to succeed Eric Cantor as the majority leader in an election set for today. McCarthy’s home district in the Central Valley has a 35 percent Latino population, and is heavily agricultural. What would his election mean for California? We’ll also discuss issues like immigration reform and the state’s high-speed rail project, which McCarthy staunchly opposes.
