In her first weeks on the job as a young foreign correspondent in Nepal, Cristi Hegranes says she had a realization. As an outsider working through “fixers and translators,” she’d never be able to fully report on the cultural, historical and political contexts of her subjects. This realization led her to found the Global Press Institute, which trains and employs women in 26 developing countries to report on their own communities. We talk with Hegranes about the contributions and future of community-based international journalism as part of Forum’s First Person series, which profiles Bay Area innovators and leaders who make our region unique.
