San Franciscans will no longer be able to chuck their table scraps in the trash with impunity, following this week’s 9-2 Board of Supervisors vote to make composting mandatory in the city. We examine the program, which begins in 90 days, enacts fines for non-compliance in 2011, and is aimed at dramatically lowering the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
