Johnny Ma

Johnny Ma was born in Shanghai, China and immigrated to Canada at the age of 10 years old. The first English sentence Johnny learned was “Can I play?” He enrolled in the Columbia University MFA directing program and, with only a very short time as a filmmaker since 2008, has built up an impressive resume.

He has made several short films, including The Break which garnered him a Grand Jury Prize for Best Short film at the 2011 Dallas International Film Festival. His short film Play earned him the 2011 DGA Jury Award for Best Asian American student filmmaker.
