Which newspaper food sections do you read? I subscribe to the San Francisco Chronicle, so I always check out that food section, but I also like to peruse several others online. Here’s what you’ll find this week.

The New York Times
My first stop on Wednesday is usually the New York Times. There is often some provocative article there. This week it’s about a chef suing over intellectual property. Apparently a past sous chef at one restaurant has opened a restaurant that may have copied everything from the interior style to the recipes of his past employer.
This week there are also articles about the sexy look of women chef on television, a report on Thai fruits that are no longer banned in America and The Minimalist column by Mark Bittman. In the current column he takes on tuna, explaining the differences between bluefin and yellowfin and sharing cooking techniques and a recipe.

The Los Angeles Times
This week there is an article about the chocolatiers of Barcelona that caught my eye and brought back memories of my trip and chocolate excursions just a year ago. The incomparable Russ Parsons writes about this years crop of stone fruit. He also includes a recipe for cobbler, which sounds more like a crumble to me. There are also some paella recipes that make me think I need to run out and buy a paella pan, like today.

The Washington Post
An article on how Pinot Noir pairs with salmon is timely now that wild salmon is showing up in markets. Also worth checking out are the recipes from the Smithsonian Folklife Festival for Brunswick Stew, Buttermilk Pancakes and Yunnan Style Cold Rice Noodles.

    I read the Chron and both NY & LA Times weekly. I don’t often buy the NYT, but if I think I’ll want to print more than two articles and associated recipes, I’ll head out with my dollar in hand!

    Tuesdays my internet treat is the Epicure section in The Age, one of main daily papers in Melbourne, Australia. (www.theage.com.au) It frequently features articles by Stephanie Alexander – her book, The Cook’s Companion, is sort of a cross between The Joy of Cooking and all of Julia Child. This week had an interesting long article on the difficulties of being a true ‘localvore’, especially with the drought the country has faced the past couple of years.

    I’ll occasionally glance at the food pages of the Toronto Star and the UK’s Guardian. Neither is a great section online, but there are occasional gems.

  • "The KCC Foodie"

    An avid eater and restaurant critic myself, I regularly visit many weekly food sections, and I look for critics with truly good writing–not too much foodie fluff; flowing, complex sentences; clear. Among my favorites are LA Weekly (lucky Pulitzer-winner Jonathan Gold!), The Examiner: San Francisco (Patricia Unterman), and Chicago Magazine (Dennis Ray Wheaton, but the whole section is luscious).

    And of course, because I LOVE San Francisco more than life itself, Michael Bauer, Meredith Brody (SFWeekly), and Paul Reidinger (SFBG) make it in, too.

Amy Sherman began blogging in 2003, because all her
friends and family were constantly asking her where
and what to eat. Three months after it launched,
Forbes chose her blog, Cooking with Amy, as one of the
top five best food blogs, praising her writing as
“smart, cozy and witty”. Since then her blog has been
featured and recipes reprinted in many newspapers and
magazines in the U.S. and the world.

In addition to regularly updating her blog, Amy is a
guest contributor to the Epicurious.com blog, and
Contributing Editor of Glam Dish. She also writes
restaurant reviews for SF Station.

Her focus on Bay Area Bites is primarily cookbook
reviews along with some interviews and current events.

Amy is a recipe developer and freelance food writer.
She is author of WinePassport: Portugal and wrote the new introduction to the classic cookbook, Jane Grigson’s Vegetable Book, published by the University of Nebraska Press. She recently completed 45 recipes for a Williams-Sonoma cookbook and wrote her first piece for VIA magazine.

She is currently serving on the board of the San Francisco Professional Food Society and is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Amy lives in San Francisco with her husband, tech journalist Lee Sherman.
