Long in the making, the reopening of the UC Theatre on University Ave. in Berkeley is official.
The theater — formerly a movie house well-known for its ongoing run of Rocky Horror Picture Show midnight screenings — kicks off its music schedule March 1 with hazy-indie rockers Best Coast and Wavves appear. On March 25, beloved quirksters They Might Be Giants perform. For a three-night run of April 7, 8 and 9, the theater hosts Grateful Dead tribute band the Dark Star Orchestra.
Now formally known as the UC Theatre Taube Family Music Hall, the auditorium — built in 1917 — had sat empty for almost 14 years before renovation began in March of this year. The theater is operated by the Berkeley Music Group, headed by former Bill Graham Presents chief operating officer David Mayeri.
