While many Bay Area residents celebrated the Fourth of July by barbecuing, drinking beer and waiting until it got dark for fireworks, thousands descended on Oakland’s Mosswood Park Saturday to enjoy the rawest of rock ‘n’ roll bands in the land.
Hosted by the always outrageous John Waters (director of the infamous cult flick Pink Flamingos), the sixth-annual Burger Boogaloo attracted rockers of all ages to its two-day lineup, which featured groups such as the Black Lips, the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, Oakland’s Shannon and the Clams, and Detroit’s godfathers of the ’80s garage revival, the Gories.
Saturday night’s lineup had San Mateo’s kings of budget rock, the Mummies, come out of retirement to headline, and by all accounts theirs was a set to remember. It not only included hits such as their cover of the Rascals’ “Come On Up,” it also featured the band riding around on mopeds while on stage.
Below are just a few snapshots of the chaos and fun had during the first day of the Boogalooo.
