Los Straitjackets and Deke Dickerson
“Odd and fun.” That’s the best way to describe the stylings on Los Straitjackets: Deke Dickerson Sings The Instrumental Hits, a new record by the mask-wearing surf-rock renegades and their guitar geek collaborator, Deke Dickerson. Here they take classic tracks that originally made their mark without the benefit of vocals and add lyrics to the mix. Details and ticket information here.
Arjuna
San Jose’s Abhinaya Dance Co., one of the Bay Area’s best practicioners of Indian dance, presents this new production based on the life of Arjuna, the bow-and-arrow master from the Mahabharata who could famously hit the eye of a bird. Subtitled “A Warrior’s Tale,” the performance evokes the archer’s heroic life and struggles. Performance runs Nov. 15 at 7pm and Nov. 16 at 4pm. Details and ticket information here.
Hari Kondabolu
Hari Kondabolu may have broken through to a larger audience as a writer and correspondent on Totally Biased, W. Kamau Bell’s political comedy series for FX, but he’s only gotten funnier since that show’s (unfair!) cancellation. As the older brother of Dapwell from the New York rap group Das Racist, Kondabolu is a natural on stage, even while discussing subjects mainstream audiences might find uncomfortable. (His debut album, recorded in Oakland, is titled Waiting for 2042—the year white people become a minority in the U.S.) Expect a very smart, quick-witted stream of humor. Details and ticket information here.
DanceFar
The great dance benefit for cancer prevention returns with an all-star cast of Bay Area dance companies, including San Francisco Ballet, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, ODC/Dance, Smuin Ballet, Ballet San Jose, Post:Ballet, Joe Orrach, SFDanceworks, tinypistol, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and dancers from Nederlands Dans Theater. Proceeds benefit the Cancer Prevention Institute of California, which so far has received over $300,000 from the annual event. Details and ticket information here.
Deerhoof
Everyone’s favorite byzantine modern-classical electronic-influenced beat-poetry math-rock indie band returns in support of their incredible 13th album, La Isla Bonita. To see enigmatic singer Satomi Matsuzaki in person is a treat enough, but drummer Greg Saunier is the real eye candy here: he flails, jerks and lurches around the kit like a charged particle. Details and ticket information here.
