‘Sweeney Todd’

This wicked musical has been a repertory staple since its debut in 1979, owing largely to lyrics and music by Stephen Sondheim. In this staging, Theatreworks Silicon Valley updates the time period to World War II, placing the story of the demon barber firmly within the “Keep Calm and Carry On” era. Charlie Haden‘Remembering Charlie Haden’

The great jazz bassist Charlie Haden died this year, leaving behind an incredible canon of music and a lifetime of memories. As a longtime repeat guest of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival—he performed there five separate times—Haden is honored in a free evening of music, stories, and a screening of the biography film Ramblin’ Boy, which tracks his life from rural Shenandoah to central Los Angeles, where he joined Ornette Coleman’s pioneering avant-garde quartet. Marc MaronLitquake 2014

Now in its 15th year, San Francisco’s massive festival of all things lit returns with another excellent lineup. Among the fiction authors, comic artists, travel writers, poets, New Yorker illustrators and more, there are appearances by Marc Maron (pictured), Rebecca Solnit, Piper Kerman, Boots Riley and many, many others. Ex HexEx Hex

Indie-rock stalwart Mary Timony made a splash in the ’90s with the band Helium, and after a spin as a solo artist, she joined members of Sleater-Kinney and Quasi to form Wild Flag. Her new band, Ex Hex, just dropped their debut record, Rips, on Merge. On Tuesday, they’ll be opening for Speedy Ortiz at the Rickshaw Stop. Details and ticket information here.
