If your Mother’s Day outings are anything like mine, they are usually a little uninspired, consisting of over-priced flowers and crowded restaurants. You, your mom, your sister, your aunt, and basically all the women in your family squabble over where to make brunch reservations, while kids scramble to find an adequate gift. But Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be so blah, especially in the Bay Area. What follows are a few ideas for spending more quality time with mom this weekend.

Mother’s Day for Mother Nature

Get domestic and get dirty! Spend the day taking cooking lessons along with workshops on everything from composting to keeping chickens in your back yard. Fresh produce will be available for purchase, hopefully inspiring you and mom to create the perfect Mother’s Day brunch together.

Mother’s Day Rose Show

The Mother’s Day Rose show has become a San Francisco tradition over the years and is sure to be a crowd pleaser among moms. Wander over to the botanical gardens and indulge yourself with some incredible eye candy! After 4pm you and mom can hand pick your own roses, courtesy of the San Francisco Rose Society.

Making Mothers Visible

Wanna get all activist with mom? Join the International Museum of Women (IMOW) for the installation of more than 50 large-scale photos of mothers from around the globe. The group is using these events to “call attention to the vital role that mothers play in San Francisco and communities around the world.” The all-day event includes art-making classes, face painting and more.
