Girls: “Honey Bunny”

SF hometown heroes Girls are at it again with their sophomore effort, Father, Son, Holy Ghost. The first single is goofy and romantic, which is what lead singer Christopher Owens does best. He charmingly melds self deprecation with humor in lyrics like: “They don’t like my boney body, they don’t like my dirty hair or the stuff that I say, or the stuff that I’m on.” He’s right; we don’t like those things, we love them.

Twin Sister: “Bad Street”

There is nothing I don’t like about this band. So I shouldn’t have been surprised when the first single off their first full length, In Heaven, was this mind-boggling good nor when their music video for said song featured the band doing something I never knew I desperately wanted to do: crash a Mexican toddler’s birthday party. It’s like they know me or something.

Friends: “Friend Crush”

Friends came out of nowhere and not a moment too soon! Fronted by the uber sexy Samantha Urbani, the Brooklyn-based band makes quite a first impression with their debut single, “Friend Crush.” It’s as infectious as bubonic plague with dreamy synths, a funky bassline, and cute sing-along lyrics like “I wanna be your friend, I wanna ask your advice on the weekday, wanna plan something nice for the weekend.” This band is totally BFF material.

St. Vincent: “Cruel”

Formerly a background figure in The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens’ band, Annie Clark has moved her wailing guitar and epic set of pipes front and center where they belong. “Cruel” is the first single from her third solo album, Strange Mercy, and it’s a doozy. The creepy video makes a great song even better with its depiction of child-assisted abduction and being buried alive. I dare you not to like it.

Still Corners: “Cuckoo”

Still Corners songwriter Greg Hughes is a self-professed cinephile and this infatuation with motion pictures boils over into his music. Anchored by Tessa Murray’s breathy, ethereal vocals, the band’s latest single “Cuckoo” sounds like a haunted love song trapped in a David Lynch film. Swoon away.

Lana del Rey: “Video Games”

Billed as the “gangster Nancy Sinatra,” Lana del Rey a.k.a. Lizzy Grant has sky-rocketed in the past month or so in the music blogosphere with her sultry single “Video Games,” but not without some controversy over whether she was manufactured by record companies or not. It’s hard to care with this song turned up so high.

The Drums: “Money”

I feel ashamed to say that I’ve just discovered The Drums, but better late than never, right? Their new album, Portamento, is ridiculously catchy and dips between the joy of finding someone to love and the despondency of losing them. They’re set to play The Independent on October 14, 2011. You would be a fool to miss it.
