Wesley Stace’s second novel, by George is the story of the Fisher family, as told by two different boys named George: one a dummy owned by one of the greatest ventriloquists in WWII-era England, the other the eleven-year-old grandson of that ventriloquist, who uncovers secrets about his famous grandfather.

As George Fisher the boy navigates the landscape of a family of women in which adult men are never trusted, he must find his own voice and talent among the fresh and faded memories of his family’s success. George’s journey spans his leaving the familiar comfort of home for boarding school, the blessings of unexpected friendships, and a quirky career not altogether different from the paths his family members chose. His story culminates in the return of George the dummy to the Fisher family and the revelation of the identity of George’s father, heartbreakingly too late.
